Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Overview
AT&T Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) IP VPNs are network-based solutions provisioned on the AT&T IP Network. AT&T provides a flexible, future-proof architecture to their customers that meets their communications needs today - and tomorrow - by designing, engineering and building IP VPN solutions that enable the integration of the best in breed network architectures.
Description/Diagram
MPLS describes a process to pass on packets through network routers after they are labeled. Initially, the process was conceived to make the process faster by utilizing MPLS's Labeled Packets technology. The labeling is performed by a Label Edge Router (LER) and switching by a Label Switch Router (LSR). The switching is performed when a label is identified on the packets, after they have been labeled. The system also utilizes IP addresses (v4 or v6) to determine intermediate routers and switches in addition to the terminals. We provision the IP VPN solution over our IP Network, utilizing AT&T's MPLS network-based solution to provide security. Customers don't need to purchase additional customer-premises VPN equipment for their sites.
