Riverbed’s WAN Acceleration Solution addresses Disaster Recovery, Security and Application Acceleration for Oracle 11i

Yesterday Riverbed announced the release of version 4.1 of their RiOS WAN Optimization and Application Acceleration software.

This release is a huge move as the likes of Cisco, Juniper, Blue Coat, Silver Peak and many others chase Riverbed in the race to win businesses over with their WAN Acceleration solutions.

On top of the 4.1 RiOS release, Riverbed also released a new version of their flagship Steelhead appliance. The Steelhead appliance, model 6120, is designed for large environments and data centers and is optimized for disaster recovery.

RiOS version 4.1 addresses many key areas that are vital to a reliable and secure network environment. The 4.1 release adds support for Oracle 11i, data encryption as well as disaster recovery.

Oracle 11i Application Optimization - The release of RiOS 4.1 now addresses application specific optimization to Oracle Forms traffic, found throughout the Oracle E-Business Suite. Riverbed has applied new application acceleration techniques to Oracle’s JInitiator Web browser plug-in, RiOS 4.1 can now accelerate Oracle 11i applications that were built using Oracle Forms. Some customers are seeing 90% data reduction in their Oracle 11i WAN traffic.

End-to-End IPSEC Security - RiOS 4.1 addresses the security requirements plaguing many businesses due to new compliance regulations. Encryption standards supported include AES 128, 192, and 256-bit. This combination of data security features gives Riverbed customers the industry’s only WAN Acceleration solution that preserves end to end security.

The encrypt to disk functionality in the new release adds to Riverbed’s ability to accelerate SSL traffic across the wide area network without compromising the business’ security trust model, and its existing support for LAN to LAN IPSEC VPNs. Beyond securing the data while it’s traversing the WAN, it also encrypts the data at the byte level while it resides on the Steelhead appliance.

Disaster Recovery Acceleration - RiOS 4.1 now includes optimization with a set of behavioral traffic recognition features that enable disaster recovery acceleration based on the size and type of the data being transferred. This dynamic acceleration is the industry’s first that automatically recognizes disaster recovery operations, such as data replication and backup jobs, to increase performance for large data transfers.

Steelhead Appliance 6120 - Riverbed’s new Steelhead appliance is designed for data center to data center or data center to DR (disaster recovery) location transfers, while being able to support acceleration for branch offices and mobile workers. The appliance has a raw capacity of 7 terabytes and a data store that is over 3 terabytes in size. This capacity is double that of Riverbed’s currently available Steelhead appliance model. The RiOS 4.1 release and Steelhead appliance 6120 work together to deliver benefits for disaster recovery operations. The new release performs more efficient reads of data on disk for replication and backup workloads. The new technology in RiOS 4.1 can absorb heavy loads, identify the traffic and accelerate the applications across the WAN during critical disaster recovery procedures.

These innovations build on Tredent’s existing success deploying Riverbed’s Steelhead solutions for our customers. We are having great success helping customers accelerate applications and optimizing wan bandwidth with our partnership with Riverbed.

Many customers are leveraging out Managed WAN Optimization & Application Acceleration Service to reduce the capital expenditure for WAN Acceleration equipment, allowing them to take advantage of the technology without the upfront cost associated with purchasing any new technology.

More to come from Riverbed……I’ll keep you posted.
